The Basic Shelf Program

Building Confidence by Supporting Families in Maintaining Food Security

We have learned from experience our clients go through intermittent food insecurity as a result of varying degrees of poverty.

Some families simply cannot apportion enough of their income to provide adequate, nutritional food for their children. Many families use most of their income for rental payments to keep a roof over their family’s heads, leaving little left to buy food. Some parents feel overwhelmed by their struggles and simply lack the energy or creativity to solve the problem of food insecurity for their families.

How The Basic Shelf Program Works

The Basic Shelf Program is a 12-week series of workshops. With a small group of attendees, participants are taught how to cook and shop for food on a limited budget. The program is based on the strategy of keeping a 'basic shelf' of ingredients in your home. Throughout the program, attendees learn how to create a variety of meals that are nutritious and affordable. Whenever an item is used, or runs out from the basic shelf, attendees will know to replenish it at the next grocery shop trip.

  • The program is comprised of 12 weekly workshops for a small group of attendees.
  • A facilitator leads the program, ensuring each workshop is educational and informative.
  • Child care for participants is provided on site at the Kottage.
  • A ‘basic shelf’ food hamper is provided that contains basic cooking ingredients, most of which can be kept for a long time without refrigeration. One ‘basic shelf’ costs approximately $300.
  • Participants receive "The Basic Shelf Cookbook" designed to utilize the basic shelf of ingredients, with tips on how to shop for food, store food and cook with a limited amount of money.
